Agent of HUB: Zan Walker-Gonçalves

From “Computer Assisted Writing” in the 1990s and “hybrid” and “100% online” WebCT courses in the 2000s to Canvas with its third-party apps in this decade, I have experimented with tech to teach. My undergrad degree is in Biology and Chemistry although my graduate degrees are in English Composition and Rhetoric; I am familiar with concepts from Science, Social Science, and Humanities.

As the Composition Program Director, I have lots of experience coaching faculty one-on-one and in small groups to use a variety of tools and strategies to meet students where they are and engage students in inquiry-based projects: individually, as a class, and in small groups. In the last year I joined IDEAL and learned to

Use Screen-Cast-O-Matic to deliver short 10-20 minute lectures/instructions
Teach students to use Adobe Spark for voice-over presentations
Hold office hours virtually and experiment with both Canvas Conferences and Zoom
Employ Canvas Groups and Collaborations to better guide Group Work
Investigate using Teams and Streams (video) as well as other tools in Office 365
Increase the efficiency and efficacy of Canvas Discussions for low-stakes (easy grading) assignments
Consider the use of Perusall and other collaborative tools to encourage reading

I look forward to assisting faculty from across the campus as I too revise my teaching strategies for the Fall to better work with students in a variety of circumstances either in person, at a distance, or some hybrid in between.
