NEW INFORMATION: I am using these in place of an Exam. Please read carefully and answer these thoroughly.
Why do we do self explanations? Self-explanation is a scientifically tested learning tool. This is not intended to assess you (there is no right or wrong answers). This is designed to strengthen your skill as a learner and reader. Research indicates that doing this process helps students process the information at a deeper level and retain more. Here are some references for the effectiveness of this technique:

I have replaced exams for this class with this process.
Answer the questions about this week's readings in your own words.
This is set up like quiz because you will be asked to answer specific questions. This is NOT timed. You can save your work and return to it at another time.
You will need to answer 4 questions for each section
- Describe the information that was new to you (not all of the information, just some aspect of it). If nothing is new to you elaborate on it in some way.
- How do these ideas/information work with or relate to what you already know?
- Why do these ideas/information work together? Provide an example.
- List two "I wonder" questions you have as a result of reading this section. Create "I wonder" questions if you do not have them (what are some unanswered questions or where should the research focus next)?
Here is a good example:
